New York in 4 days: day 3

The best day of my trip!

Day 3

The sun was out and it was high time I went to Soho. First though it was Brooklyn Bridge with its striking views of Manhattan. The Freedom Tower and Empire State Building reminded me of not so long ago events and just what this city is all about: standing tall no matter what and the American dream that so many people pursue and so few live in.

Next up on my itinerary was New York’s shopping and street style heaven: Soho. There are only a few shops where I can really lose myself (my conscious-, budget-wise self that is) and What Goes Around Comes Around is in my top 5. If you, like me, covet vintage Chanel and Valentino than maybe you will be entering dangerous grounds. I felt like Breakfast at Tiffany’s but instead of gorgeous diamonds, one-of-a-kind 2.5 vintage Chanel bags made me drool my heart out.

What Goes Around Comes Around, Soho

In a vintage haze I continued my Soho walk through Mercer and Greene Streets only to go head over heels, or should I say desire over finances, into Rag & Bone‘s store. I love the label and even more so their new collection, so an hour passed in seconds. Fresh salad with avocado and orange spurred me down to Bloomingdale’s where a Marc by Marc Jacobs watch was sitting pretty on the counter for me, and unbeknown to me Bess NYC was anxiously expecting my presence a block away. Little correction here, it was the other way round really, the anticipation was from me as I found myself entering the brand’s only store on 292 Lafayette Street. Despite promising not to spend anymore money on shopping, vivid images from Punk: Chaos to Couture came flashing back in my mind and I indulged in another buy, which I am particularly proud of: washed out, white denim waistcoat with embroidery on the back.

‘That was it for me and shopping’, I was off to an ear-popping ride to the dazzling heights of Empire State Building’s 102nd floor. Rush hour is the best way to describe it…but well worth it, at least for the first time in New York that is. The views from both 86th and 102nd floors are truly mesmerising and the experience of visiting that iconic building is spell-bounding. However, next time I will be admiring the city skyline and Empire State Building from the Top of the Rock, hopefully in a more peaceful setting, ideally with a glass of something in hand and no eager tourists buzzing about like headless chicks.

Soho!

New York in 4 days: day 2

And here is what happened on my second day in New York…

Day 2

It was not a good start to the day: cursing my way through Central Park in the pouring rain, without my morning coffee yet, I had totally misjudged the short (in my head!) walk to the MET. Exhausted and drenched, I entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My first thought was ‘coffee!’ but after an hour of failed attempts to find that coffee place that was ‘just 2 rooms away, first on your left.. then right..straight ahead and then across the Roman exhibition room’ I gave up. My advice to anyone going there is to spend some time studying the many maps of the museum and to know where they are heading, I simply didn’t. There was anyway only one exhibition I wanted to see, so I forgot about my elusive coffee and headed to Punk: Chaos to Couture and like this my day suddenly brightened. A quick lunch back in East Village at the Duck’s Eatery and I was ready to hit Williamsburg’s hip Sunday flea market.Little did I know, and to my great disbelief, the market was closed due to the bad weather.

‘Such bad luck’ I told myself, but came out wrong because only in a few minutes I found myself in the Artists & Fleas market trying on hand made jewellery and gazing at paintings by local artists. It was no surprise I headed out armed with a few bags and a lighter wallet. Fueled by the creative and inspirational energy of the many artists I’d met, I knew this was a place I would visit time and time again. There was no stopping me now, so despite the rubbish weather I headed to the riverside for a stroll. I could barely make Empire State Building in the thick fog blanket but never felt so happy discovering a new place.

New York in 4 days: day 1

In this month’s Elle Bulgaria I had my first travel feature published (so thrilled!). In this and following three posts I want to share with you what I saw, tasted, felt and left permanent marks on me. At the end of each post you can read the relevant text from the feature in Bulgarian. And so I begin…

New York in 4 days

A lifelong dream of mine came true. Even if it were only for a few days, it was enough to feel the beating heart of the city that never sleeps and fall in love with the magical craziness of its streets. And I had a plan in mind, a simple yet not easy one: to steer clear of the tourist spots.

It’s all about prep

I told myself ‘what better advice there is about the city than that coming directly from the people who are making New York streets look so cool’ so I scoured through the pages of all New York based fashion and street style blogs, starting with The Sartorialist and Garance Dore. I also got some great tips from my friend Geri, the best one was to forget the map and let Williamsburg take over my senses for a full day. The hardest box to tick on my prep list by far was where to stay but thankfully I came across Airbnb’s Neighborhood Guide. Loved by New Yorkers, artistic and rustic East Village seemed to have all I wanted and there I was unpacking in Eric’s design nest: brick works, vintage furniture and the oh-so-New York fire escape ladder outside the window, a home away from home.

Day 1

It was Saturday early afternoon and my lack of sleep from the long work week just gone was taking its toll on me but there was no time for rest now. After a scrumptious (and very late) brunch in the Northern Spy Food Co, just a stone throw away from the apartment, I was on my way to Chelsea’s High Line: New York’s manmade green oasis wrapped around long forgotten rail lines.

Transformed rail lines, the High Line

Before I knew the sun had slowly made its way down and with my high school friend in hand we headed to 230 Fifth: it was cocktail o’clock!

Stay tuned for what happened next.

Text from Elle Bulgaria:
